Zacharias I'm the one that melted your cauldron. It was an accident! I thought it was a school cauldron and I was making a potion that was too difficult and I did it wrong and it started to melt and I couldn't figure out how to stop it.

It wasn't sabotage, I swear. Just an accident. You can use my cauldron for the exam and I'll use a school cauldron. And I'll buy you a new one over hols and bring it when we come back.

I'm really really really sorry.

I got a letter from Auntie Brunhilda today. She's been very ill and doesn't think she'll be able to visit for Christmas. I don't see how she knows she won't be coming to our house for Christmas when it's ages away yet. That's a very long time to be sick.

Next Friday morning before we leave we're having a Potions exam. I'm actually really nervous about it. It's my best and favourite subject and I want to do well. I've memorised everything but even if you've memorised something it doesn't matter if you can't actually make the potion.

I'm bored with chess. I don't think I want to play anymore. I suppose I'll catch up on my schoolwork next weekend instead.

Does anyone want to borrow my chess set for the rest of the tourney? They're quite good. Just don't listen to the king's bishop. He gives horrid advice.

I can't sleep.

Crabbe and/or Goyle are snoring and the sound muffling charms on my bedcurtains are gone and I don't remember the incantation and I think it's in a book in my trunk but it's cold out there and besides I don't want to wake anyone up.

I've had the Cruciatus curse cast on me before. But I asked for it, so I don't reckon it was as painful as it could have been because he didn't really want to hurt me and you've got to really want it.

Astronomy was wizard last night. There wasn't any moon so you could see everything. Michael and I shared a telescope and we looked at the Andromeda Galaxy.

Is anyone else awake?

Michael and I have been playing chess all day to practise for the tournament.

Well okay we stopped for meals but other than that it was lots and lots of chess. Draco came and played with us for a couple of games but then he left cos he wanted to go read a book.

I wish Michael were in Slytherin so we could play in the common room instead of in the library or the great hall.

Auntie Brunhilda owled me a pair of woolen socks yesterday. They itch. She knows charms to make them not itch but itching is supposed to make me a stronger person.

I think I'd rather not be itchy.

Can you vote someone out of your House?

He liked it. He really truly liked it.

I don't think what Harry did was wrong. That jinx isn't anything like Imperius. Imperius makes somebody make you do something and you don't have any choice in the matter. Longbottom could have gone somewhere and stopped talking to people and thrown his quill away. But he didn't. Besides, it was just a silly jinx anyway. I don't see why everyone is so cross about it. Everyone knows Longbottom wouldn't really say those things.

Also I said that the ghosts are better here than at home but I was sort of wrong. Our ghosts are very boring and they like to stand behind you when you're having dinner and watch you when you sleep. The ones here mind their own business most of the time and tell good stories other times, but at home we don't have a poltergeist.

I really hate Peeves.

Michael and I found his necklace today. It was in the library under a bookcase. I was looking around to see if maybe it had got caught on one of the shelves or a book or something, and this huge book fell off the shelf and hit me on the head. But since it knocked me down I was on the floor and could see under the bookcase and there it was. The necklace, not the book. Although the book was on the floor too.

And the book is all about magical theory, so maybe the bookcase knew what I wanted and shoved it out at me? Because I wanted to know more about what magic is, and I wanted to find Michael's necklace and now I've got both.

I don't know how much the book is going to help me though, it's awfully big.

After my mother died I cut her wand open. I wanted to see the unicorn hair inside. I still don't really understand how they work though. I know my wand is willow with dragon heartstring, but what makes it magic? Does the dragon heartstring make it magic? And if so, what makes the dragon magic?

Why do broomsticks fly? Why do Portkeys take you places? I know it's magic, but how?

Potions almost make sense. All the things put together make a whole potion. But what makes that magic?

At least I know how birds fly. They have wings and hollow bones.

Is it wrong that I don't have anything to complain about?

Everyone else is complaining. But no one has stolen my tea or my shampoo, and I haven't ruined my notes, and I haven't lost any jewellery, and I actually like it here. The ghosts here are better than the ghosts at home, and it's nice having lots of people around. There wasn't anyone at my house besides Father and me and sometimes Auntie Brunhilda.

I don't miss Auntie Brunhilda at all.

It wasn't brown after all.

Mrs Lestrange, did we do something wrong or was it some sort of mudblood trick? It was red just like all the other blood I've seen.

I suppose it makes sense. Even an animal's blood is red.

But I really thought it would be brown.

Why do our dormitories have to be in the dungeon? I'm not very good at damp repelling charms. Although I suppose things could be a lot worse. I could be somewhere else. Or not anywhere at all even.

Did anyone bring any animals with them to school?
